Our Why
Arizona has long been a political battleground, often referred to as a swing state due to its fluctuating support between major political parties. Despite this, for nearly six decades, the state has been predominantly led by Republican officials. Over the years, a series of legislative measures have been enacted, many of which have raised concerns about voter suppression, particularly targeting communities of color.
These measures include the removal of drop boxes and emergency voting locations, which have traditionally provided more accessible voting options for many voters, particularly in underserved areas. Additionally, legislative efforts have blocked proposals to make Election Day a state holiday, which would have made it easier for working individuals to vote. Further complicating the electoral landscape is the practice of gerrymandering, which has manipulated district boundaries in ways that dilute the voting power of minority communities.
In response to these challenges, the Arizona BIPOC Voter Alliance was founded. Our mission is to combat these voter suppression tactics, ensuring that all voices—particularly those in BIPOC communities—are heard and represented in the democratic process. Our work is driven by the belief that equitable access to voting is fundamental to a fair and just society.
